Elk in the wild in Cherokee, NC

On a recent trip to Cherokee, NC we saw some Elk come in to a field just outside of town.  This was a treat since we had never seen Elk in the wild anywhere in the southeast in my lifetime.  There was several elk that came into the field to feed  at the Oconaluftee Visitor Center. I was interested to find out more information about the Elk and how they are thriving in the smokey mountain area.
